Custody to Community

Creating empowering pathways for individuals with disabilities returning to society.

For individuals living with disabilities, transitioning from correctional centres back into the community is often a difficult journey filled with uncertainty and vulnerability.

After leaving behind the structured environment of the criminal justice system, many people face significant challenges such as homelessness, social disconnection, and a heightened risk of re-offending.

Breaking the Cycle: Comprehensive Housing and Support Services

Re-entering society after incarceration can feel overwhelming, particularly for individuals with disabilities who must not only find stable housing but also reconnect with crucial services such as Community Corrections, mental health providers, and social support networks. Statistics show that almost 40% of people in Australia’s prison system live with a disability, significantly higher than the national average, making tailored support crucial for this demographic. At Milestone Transition and Support, we provide housing specifically designed to meet the unique needs of people living with disabilities, ensuring they have the care and stability needed for successful reintegration. Our approach goes beyond just providing a place to stay we offer holistic care that addresses mental health, trauma recovery, and financial empowerment, giving individuals the resources they need to thrive.

Trauma-Informed Care: Supporting Recovery and Resilience

The majority of people leaving prison carry the burden of trauma, often from a combination of childhood experiences and their time within the criminal justice system. Research from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) indicates that up to 50% of incarcerated individuals have experienced childhood trauma, with many also suffering from mental health issues. At Milestone, we believe that recovery from trauma is an essential part of reintegration. Our trauma-informed care approach recognises the deep psychological impact that traumatic experiences have and ensures that our residents receive compassionate, understanding care. By addressing trauma head-on, we create an environment where individuals feel safe, heard, and empowered to move forward and breaking behaviour cycles.

As our team often notes, “When people are given the right support, healing is possible and with healing comes the potential for real change.”

Trauma-Informed Care: Supporting Recovery and Resilience

Beyond housing and mental health services, reintegration involves building a sense of belonging and community. Feeling disconnected or isolated can lead to reoffending, with studies showing that social support is a critical factor in reducing recidivism. At Milestone, we focus on helping our residents rebuild their lives through capacity building, employment services, skills training, and community engagement. We encourage participation in local events, group activities, and connection with peer support networks to help individuals establish a sense of identity and purpose beyond their past experiences. This is also why we strive for compatibility of participants within each house is a significant factor.

As one of our participants said, "Being part of a community helped me see that I wasn’t just someone who made mistakes I could be someone who contributes and belongs."

Preventing Recidivism: A New Approach to Breaking the Cycle

The statistics surrounding recidivism are alarming, with nearly 46% of released prisoners in Australia returning to custody within two years, according to a report by the Productivity Commission. However, evidence shows that comprehensive support particularly when tailored to the needs of those with disabilities can significantly reduce these numbers. At Milestone Transition and Support, our mission is to disrupt this cycle by providing a supportive environment that fosters accountability, healing and personal growth. We have witnessed firsthand how individuals who once felt trapped in a cycle of incarceration can turn their lives around when given the right care and resources.

As one of our team members emphasises, “When people are supported in ways that address both their immediate needs and their long-term aspirations, transformation becomes possible.”
